Underground structure Anti Flotation Calculations
RD-Engineering associates Ltd were appointed by a M & E contractor within the water industry to undertake flotation calculations for a wastewater pumping station and inspection chambers on a site with a high-water table.
We undertook structural calculations to ensure that the uplift force from ground water pressure did not exceed the resisting forces (dead weight of structure) which would cause the structures to push upwards towards the surface, thus damaging the structure and associated pipework.
To ensure sufficient resistance to uplift was obtained, RD calculated the maximum uplift force applied on the structures and designed a reinforced concrete slab at the base of the structures to ensure uplift was adequately resisted.
