Commercial Industrial Distribution Park
RD-Engineering Associates Ltd. were appointed as Structural Engineering Consultants for a significant commercial warehouse redevelopment project in Greater Manchester.
The client’s brief was to extend the vehicular access to the front of the existing warehouse to accommodate HGV vehicles.
However, due to space restrictions at the site, the only way to increase the vehicle access area is to reduce the existing premises footprint, which required removing the existing front elevation. A full analysis of the existing steel framed structure was undertaken confirming that modifications could be undertaken to the portal frame structure without significant complexity or costs.
RD designed a new front bay portal incorporating a canopy structure, as well as new R.C hard standing, surface water drainage, foundations and structural steel support for new roller shutters doors/access doors.
Due to a lack of “as-built information” available, RD Engineering carried out site dimensional surveys assessment to confirm the existing structural conditions and identify any potential issues.
During the project we reused existing structural steel members that were to be removed as part of the project, reducing the amount of new structural steelwork required providing a cost saving to the client and environmental sustainability benefits.
